Absinthe is a liqueur with a rather checkered past. There are a number of folks who stay away from it for fear that induces hallucinations. In fact, it’s a green anise-flavored liqueur made from botanicals: wormwood, anise, fennel, and other herbs. This combination gives it an herbal flavor with a strong black licorice finish.
Absinthe was illegal in Europe and the US for almost 100 years. It became popular in the 1840s but started to be mistakenly associated with violent crimes. Because people started to believe there was a correlation between absinthe and violent crimes, the rumor started to circulate if it had hallucinogenic qualities and as a result, absinthe was banned.
Modern research has confirmed absinthe is no more harmful than any other alcohol.
